Summary Pip gets a letter from Biddy stating that Joe will come for a visit. Pip does not want him to come, and especially does not want Drummle to see him. When Joe arrives he tries to small talk with Pip about the things going on. Pip doesn't seem interested with the information Joe brings until he mentions that Estella has returned to the Satis House. Pip starts to act warmer towards Joe after this news but Joe leaves. Pip, guilty of his actions, decides to take a visit home to see Estella. Pip's memories of the convict from so many years ago haunts him when he sees the mysterious man from the pub (Ch. 10 pg.71) in the carriage in which he is traveling home. The mysterious man mentions "Pip's convict" and Pip gets off the carriage many miles before town. Discussion 1. Do you think Pip is changing to be a better person or worse? 2. What does Pip think of Joe before he comes and after? Do his views about Joe change? How do they change? Why?
3. Do you think Pip has realized what he has become? Do you think he has realized that he has forgotten home and the people he truly loves? How does he feel about his actions?
4. Why do you think Pip's past will not leave him alone ? What do you think is the relevance to the story of him remembering his past?
